Gnathology is the branch of Dentistry dealing with prevention, diagnosis, treatment plan and rehabilitation of the paraphysiological or pathological conditions that could affect negatively the stability and proper function of the stomatognathic system.
Gnathology aims at restoring a correct occlusion, namely proper static (at rest) and dynamic (during oral functions) interactions between dental arches.
The occlusal balance or the removal of wrong mandibular positions can be obtained by means of cutomized functional appliances (bite planes).
